A young hitchhiker crosses a vast landscape in search of the mother he has lost—and the father he has never known.
Little Mikey comes from the mythical West Coast town of Freeburg. When he sets out alone on an epic journey across South Africa, the road becomes his teacher.
Travelling toward the legendary city of Goldtown, he encounters strangers, wanderers, dreamers and drifters from every corner of society. Each offers him a glimpse of another way to live. Each leaves him with a piece of the wisdom he will need to continue.
Inspired by Milton Schorr's own years of hitchhiking across Southern Africa, Europe and Australia, A Man of the Road is a modern fable about freedom, fate, human kindness, and the long search for home.
Part adventure story, part coming-of-age tale, it asks a simple question: if home is not a place, then where do we find it?
